Potassium nitrate is an oxidizing agent. Therefore, its main use was the production of black powder. It is currently used in pyrotechnics as an oxidizing agent, including to produce photoflashes, ie short and very bright pulses of light produced when a mixture of nitrate and metal dust is burned. When mixed with a saccharide such as sucrose in stoichiometric proportions and melted, it forms a combustible substance (known as caramel or caramel) with a flash point of around 400 °C, reaches a temperature of 600 °C and produces a lot of smoke
Until the early 20th century, potassium nitrate was used to produce nitric acid.
Today it is mainly used to produce potassium nitrite, for nitration
Potassium nitrate mixed with sugar or powdered sugar is the basic fuel (oxidizer) component in handcrafted pyrotechnics. It is also a fertilizer and a preservative.
