CONTENTS:

Coconut oil is considered one of the healthiest oils in the world and is extracted from the flesh of the coconut palm. At room temperature, it is a fairly hard, white mass, but when heated, it becomes liquid. Its fragrance is slightly coconutty, delicate, and sweet. It is valued for its positive effects on our health and appearance. Three types of coconut oil are commercially available:

  • New product – least processed, retains the most valuable nutrients,
  • refined - the most "purified", subjected to the processes of bleaching and removal of sediments, is perfect for frying, does not burn, does not change the taste and smell of food, has a long shelf life,
  • Unrefined – Contains more nutrients than refined coconut, retains the aftertaste and aroma of coconut. It's not suitable for frying, but ideal for cosmetic treatments.

Choosing the best type of coconut oil for us depends on what we want to use it for. Let's take a closer look.

Coconut oil – properties and nutrients

Although coconut oil is mostly composed of saturated fatty acids, it is classified as a so-called superfood, meaning healthy products that have a health-promoting effect on our bodies. This is because the saturated fatty acids in coconut oil are mostly medium-chain fatty acids (or MCTs), which have different properties than long-chain fatty acids. The digestion and absorption process of MCT fatty acids differs from other fatty acids because they are absorbed directly into the liver via the portal vein. This gives them health-promoting and antibacterial effects. In addition, coconut oil is a source of:

  • Vitamins: B2, B6, C, E and K,
  • Folic acid ,
  • lauric acid,
  • Linoleic acid,
  • Magnesium,
  • Potassium,
  • Phosphorus,
  • Zinc,
  • Calcium,
  • Iodine,

Coconut oil – application

In the kitchen, refined coconut oil is excellent for frying and baking cakes. It helps regulate blood sugar levels and can be consumed in small amounts even by diabetics. Thanks to its lauric acid content, coconut oil has antibacterial, antifungal, and antiviral properties, while linoleic acid and vitamin E provide its moisturizing properties. Coconut acid can be applied directly to the skin instead of lotion. It perfectly smooths and moisturizes the skin and soothes irritations. You can massage it all over the body. Coconut oil can also be used as a hair conditioner, leaving it nourished, soft, and shiny. Remember: If you want to use coconut oil for skin care, choose the first-pressed and unrefined oil.

Coconut oil is definitely a must-have for a healthy, balanced daily diet. However, it's important to remember that despite its valuable benefits and vitamin and mineral content, it still contains fat and should therefore be consumed in moderation.
