Gurmar – what is it and how does it work? This sugar destroyer comes from Asia
Gurmar , or more specifically Gymnema sylvestre, is a plant native to South India that belongs to the woody vine family. Indians call it a sugar destroyer—the gymnemic acid it contains blocks sweet taste receptors, thus effectively suppressing cravings for sweet snacks. Gurmar also helps regulate blood sugar levels. Therefore, its supplementation is believed to be helpful for weight loss or diabetes.
Gurmar – Properties
Gurmar leaves are mainly used medicinally. They contain:
- Triterpene glycosides – gymnemic acids,
- Triterpene saponins,
- Gurmarin,
- Resin,
- Anthraquinones,
- Inositol,
- numerous organic acids.
This plant composition produces a hypoglycemic effect, meaning it lowers glucose levels. Gymnema Sylvestre is especially recommended for people with diabetes and problems with insulin and glucose metabolism. It can also be used to prevent diabetic complications, inhibit weight gain, and reduce cholesterol levels in diabetics. Supplementation with this plant is recommended during weight loss treatment, especially for people struggling with excessive appetite and compulsive overeating. Gymnema also has a regulating effect on the digestive tract, supporting the treatment of stomach disorders such as diarrhea, constipation, or flatulence, indigestion, and helping to remove residual mucus. It also has antibacterial and caries-preventing properties. In summary: Supplementing with Gymnema Sylvester leaf extract:
- supports the smooth functioning of the digestive system,
- contributes to the maintenance of normal cholesterol levels,
- blocks the receptors responsible for the perception of sweet and bitter tastes without affecting other tastes, thus effectively regulating the appetite for sweets.
- reduces the absorption of glucose from food by the intestine,
- increases insulin secretion,
- regenerates the islet cells of the pancreas, which are responsible for the secretion of insulin and glucagon,
- affects the proper use of glucose by the body and leads to lower levels of glycemia and glycated hemoglobin, an indicator of diabetes control in people with type I and type II diabetes.
- supports the weight loss process by regulating blood sugar levels.
The effects of Gurmar are most noticeable with regular use for at least three months. It is very important to follow the recommendations on the supplement packaging and not to exceed the recommended dose. Dietary supplementation has a positive effect on the proper functioning of our body; it also helps regenerate the pancreas and cleanse the body of toxins. To date, no side effects have been reported with the use of preparations containing Gurmar . Due to the lack of research confirming the safety of Gurmar in children, pregnant, or breastfeeding women, its use is not recommended. People with impaired blood sugar levels are advised to consult a diabetologist before starting treatment to determine the appropriate dose of antidiabetic drugs.
