Allspice is the fruit of the allspice tree, also known as the spice bush (Pimenta dioica). It is native to the tropical regions of Central America and Mexico. Some of the goods delivered to Europe come from Jamaica. The allspice tree grows up to 10-12 meters tall, is evergreen, and has leathery, shiny leaves. The fruits are green, turn red when ripe, and take on a beautiful brown color when dried. The allspice fruits used as food are harvested before ripening. Interestingly, allspice is the only spice that is grown exclusively in the Western Hemisphere.
Allspice has an irresistible aroma, in which gourmets recognize notes of cardamom, nutmeg, cinnamon, pepper, and many other commonly used spices. Hence the English name of this spice, Allspice, which suggests that it contains the taste and aroma of almost all spices. The main use of this spice is to enrich the flavor of marinades, sauces, and soups of all kinds. Additionally, allspice is used to season various types of meat, including mutton, pork, and veal, as well as homemade sausages. Not to forget, the spice is also an essential component of homemade pickles. An interesting use of allspice is to refine sweet liqueurs, cakes, or gingerbread.
Store pickles in airtight, resealable containers. For this reason, each of our spice packages is equipped with a zipper that makes closing and opening easier. Allspice in ordinary foil not only loses its beautiful aroma very quickly after opening but can also easily fall out of the packaging, for example, into a drawer or cupboard. Your convenience is important to us! Whole spices, such as allspice, release their aroma more slowly, so it is worth adding them earlier in the cooking process.
Allspice stimulates the secretory functions of the digestive tract and inhibits excessive fermentation. It is characterized by a high content of active substances that relieve inflammatory processes and pain. Therefore, it is worth considering for muscle, joint, or tooth pain. It improves blood circulation, protects the heart, and enhances its function. Studies show that allspice has a growth-inhibiting effect on the bacteria Escherichia coli and Listeria monocytogenes.
