Daily nutrition, regardless of the choice of valuable food, is not able to provide the human body with an adequate dose of vitamins and minerals. The amount of vitamins necessary for life is really small, but at the same time crucial for the functioning of the body. Demand can be related to age, gender, health status, or simply lifestyle. Vitamin C belongs to the group of water-soluble vitamins. It is a rich source of many beneficial properties and effects on the body: strengthening, supporting and antioxidant.

Properties and uses of vitamin C.

Vitamin C is also known as ascorbic acid, compounds of which are used very widely. Widely considered a cold remedy or immune booster. However, this is not entirely true and is consistent with current research. This vitamin has many valuable properties, but in terms of reducing infection, it does not shorten the duration of a cold or relieve its symptoms. However, this does not mean that you should stop taking it, on the contrary. Taken as a preventative, it can reduce the risk of catching a cold by up to 50 percent, especially in hard-working people or athletes.

The supporting effect of ascorbic acid on the circulatory system has been proven. Vitamin C strengthens and seals blood vessels, preventing the occurrence of blood vessel injuries, bleeding gums or bruises. In addition, it inhibits the oxidation of LDL cholesterol and reduces unwanted changes and supports the absorption of iron, making it a good supplement for anemia.

In addition, vitamin C is involved in the formation of collagen, which is a component of articular cartilage. Ascorbic acid has a positive effect on the mobility of the joints, it is also necessary for the excretion and formation of ossein, i.e. a bone component. The effect of this vitamin on teeth and gums is also important - it not only strengthens them, but also kills bacteria that can cause tooth decay.

Vitamin C Sources

We cannot produce vitamin C ourselves, so it should be supplied to the body from outside through food or appropriate supplements. The daily requirement of ascorbic acid is 90 mg for men, 75 mg for women and about 40-50 mg for children. Remember that you can overdose on anything, even vitamin C. For most supplements, such a daily dose is 1000 mg - after exceeding it, symptoms of an overdose may appear.

Ascorbic acid is found in many vegetables and fruits. It is found in parsley, Brussels sprouts, bell peppers and horseradish. The five best sources of vitamin C include acerola, which contains 1000 to even 4500 mg of vitamin C per 100 g, and wild rose - this contains slightly less, namely 250 to 800 mg of vitamin C per 100 g.

Acerola and wild rose - a rich source of vitamin C.

Acerola tops the list of the richest sources of vitamin C. It is a sweet and juicy fruit that is also called Barbados cherry. Its enormous amounts of ascorbic acid are valued all over the world. Acerola also contains vitamins A, B1, B2 as well as magnesium, potassium, niacin, phosphorus, calcium, iron and pyridoxine. It also contains protein, fats and carbohydrates. Due to the fact that these fruits are fresh very soon after harvest, it is difficult to get them in Poland, as export is limited. However, it is worth using preparations and dietary supplements based on acerola juice or pulp.

The wild rose also has numerous health benefits, it is valued by both the cosmetic, pharmaceutical and herbal industries. Among other things, due to the abundant ascorbic acid resources, which contain up to 40 times more than citrus fruits.
