Golden Flaxseed - Characteristics of the Plant

The golden flax - Linum flavum L. - belongs to the flax family, grows 30 to 50 cm tall, and is recognized by its delicate yellow flowers. It naturally occurs on dry meadows and slopes, and its flowers can be admired from June to August. Flaxseeds are very commonly used in naturopathy and dietetics. They are flat, 2-3 mm large, golden-colored seeds. When soaked in water, they increase their volume many times over while surrounding themselves with a large amount of mucilage.

Golden and Brown Flaxseeds - Differences

The first distinguishing feature between these two types of flaxseeds is the fat and calorie content. Golden seeds are "fitter," meaning they contain slightly less fat than the brown variety but have a higher protein content. Another important difference is the content of polyunsaturated fatty acids. Golden flax contains significantly more of these as well as two essential fats that the body cannot produce itself: alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) and linoleic acid. In contrast, brown flax contains more monounsaturated fatty acids.

Flaxseed - Properties

Due to the proven health-promoting properties of flaxseed, its use for health prevention is generally recommended. Among the most valuable components are antioxidants, fiber, fatty acids, and phytoestrogens. Regular consumption of flaxseed helps maintain the body's physiological balance. Flaxseed is especially important for:

• Constipation - due to its high fiber content, flaxseed helps regulate the digestive system and is effective for intestinal problems.
• Weight loss - aside from its nutrient richness, flaxseed is an ideal supplement for people on a diet for an important reason: it leads to faster satiety and suppresses appetite.

Take 2-3 teaspoons daily after soaking or as an addition to meals, yogurt, or bread.
