Liposomes are structures that arise spontaneously from phospholipids. They have the form of water (or aqueous solution) filled vesicles with a size of 0.01-1 micron surrounded by a double lipid layer with a thickness of about 5 nanometers, hence they are also called phospholipid vesicles. Their shell resembles biological membranes. Phospholipid vesicles are biocompatible (consisting of the same components as our body's cell membranes) and small enough to penetrate the walls of blood vessels. Liposomes have the ability to carry both water and lipids, making them an ideal delivery system for substances needed by our body's cells.
