Lemon balm belongs to the mint family (Labiatae), originates from the Mediterranean region, and has been known in Europe for centuries. For medicinal purposes, the leaves or the whole herb are harvested in June before flowering. The most well-known effect is the calming effect of lemon balm leaves. The active substances contained in the plant also have diastolic, carminative, lactobacillary, cholagogic, cholepoietic, and antiseptic effects. The essential oil of lemon balm inhibits the growth of viruses, fungi, protozoa, and bacteria.
