Pterostilbene is a version of the resveratrol molecule that has been only slightly modified by nature by exchanging two small chemical substituents. However, this slight substitution results in pterostilbene, when administered orally, being absorbed four times better than resveratrol and thus much more effective than it. For this reason, pterostilbene has been called "stronger resveratrol." Some authors, however, point out that not all effects of the two nutrients exactly overlap, so such a view is not entirely correct.

Numerous studies have been conducted on isolated cells, animal models, and volunteer subjects, confirming the extremely broad properties of resveratrol and pterostilbene.

Both pterostilbene and resveratrol are stilbene compounds that are structurally closely related, giving them similar functions. The two compounds work together to activate the "longevity gene SIRT1."
